My friend Susie just mentioned that it is not healthy for babies below the age of one to be open to television visuals and sound. Is it true? I often have my baby in my lap when I am watching some of my favorite programs.

She is right. Keep your baby away from television as much as possible. Sooner she will be addicted to cartoons...so refrain her now, as long as it is in your hands.
